Wondering if it might be time to take a break from social media? I don’t blame you. We live in a screen and social media filled world. It’s available to us 24/7, and we all know just how addicting it can me.

I have been thinking lately that with all this time we spend on social media, we also need to make sure we take breaks. There definitely is such a thing as too much screen time, and it’s important to be aware enough to recognize the signs of when to sign off.

I think spending so much time on social media makes us lose touch with being present, which is something I really try to work on. We’re too involved with whatever we’re currently scrolling, that we miss out on what’s happening around us.

With being a blogger comes LOTS of time on so many different social media platforms. I am going to be making an effort to take more intentional screen time breaks because I am guilty of pretty much all of these points below.

Group of people who need to take a break from social media.

1. All Your Free Time Is Spent On A Screen

When you wake up. Before you go to sleep. During your work break. While you eat your meals. Commuting. During conversations. While you watch a show. While you’re cooking. And all the other bits and pieces of time that make up our life – are you spending it on social media?

If all your moments of free time are spent looking at a screen, then you probably need to take a break from social media. You’re forgetting how to be present, and how to enjoy moments with your friends, or yourself.

And let’s be real, it can’t be that good for your eyes. Designate some time to be off the phone, and be in the moment.

Also, it’s fine to waste some time here and there mindlessly scrolling, but we both know that there are plenty of better things you could be doing with your time. Even if it’s just getting more sleep (which I know I could definitely use more of!)

2. It’s Taking A Toll On Your Self-Esteem

With social media showing us the “highlight reel” of everyones life around us, comparisons only prove to be detrimental.

If you find yourself always feeling down, or pangs of jealousy, every time you’re scrolling through a feed, then it’s time to take a break from social media.

Remember, people are only showing us the exact picture they want to show us, they’re rarely showing the outtakes and unflattering angles. It’s not fair to compare your worst angle with someone’s best!

Also, the need for the most amount of likes, shares, comments, and whatever else has given us the wrong idea of how to determine our self worth. It’s SO much bigger than some interactions on social media. Being kind, funny, a good friend, encouraging, and so much more, is way more important than how many likes you got on a picture.

3. You’re Only Doing Things “For The Gram”

It’s totally fine to want to share bits of your life on social media, that’s what it’s for. But, if you’re only doing things in order to show it off, then you’re missing out on so much.

Take pictures to remember the moments, but also take time to be IN the moment, and not just to share it online. You’ll cherish those moments so much more if you do.

Social media apps on a cell phone.

4. All Your Convos Happen While You’re Scrolling

As much as we can think we’re great at multi-tasking, and can full listen while we’re scrolling, I highly doubt that’s true.

Put the phone down. Listen to who is talking to you. Besides the fact that you’ll be able to fully participate in the conversation better, it’s also just more polite to give who you’re talking to your full attention.

5. You Can’t Go A Few Minutes Without Checking Your Phone

Can you be in a room without your phone in it? Are you constantly checking it? Do you quit the Facebook app only to go to your home screen and immediately click on Facebook again? Time to take a break from social media!

Turn the sound on so someone can reach you if they need to, put the phone down, and go do something else! Let’s break the social media addiction and do something better with our time, at least SOME of the time.

Who wants to join me in taking more breaks away from social media and our phones?
