I may be a little bit biased, but I happen to think our story is pretty damn cute ❤️It is a long one though, so grab a snack! This is partially so I have this in one place to look back on, so I’m sorry in advance if it’s too long or boring or anything, I just wanted it all written down.

So, it goes allllll the way back to middle school. I was the new kid going into 6th grade because we had recently moved. Our last names both start with D, so we often were seated near each other. He was really the first person I became friends with, and was always so nice to me.

My mom thought so highly of him because he was my first friend, and so when birthday parties came around and she met his mom, she made a point to tell his mom how sweet she thought he was for being my friend. The two of them became fast friends, and are still besties to this day!

So because our moms were such close friends, we also got to go on family vacations together. I remember at the end of 7th grade we went on a beach weekend trip and I realized I had such a crush on him! I think I stayed silent about it for a while, and even though he felt the same, he stayed silent too.

When 8th grade rolled around, we had a very romantic AIM session where we confessed feelings towards each other, deciding to be boyfriend and girlfriend. We hung out all the time, and when we weren’t together we were either on the phone, or chatting on Instant Messenger (tbt!!) We went on more family vacations together, including a big trip to Georgia, where him and I had our first kiss. He got me a heart necklace for Valentine’s Day that I still have somewhere. I had a pair of jeans I wore all the time that had his name written in pen on them, so basically it was as serious as any middle school romance could get.

In 9th grade, he was my homecoming date, and yes, I have the very embarrassing pictures to prove it (but those are NOT going on the internet!) But as that school year went on, that boy had a wandering eye, and he wanted to live the single life. I’ve since forgiven him ?

It was time for us to go our separate ways, and see other people, whatever that means for 14 year olds lol. It’s funny looking back on it all now, but it was a really hard time for me. It’s honestly making me sad to even think about right now! It was both of our first *serious* relationship, and major breakup, and beyond that, we both knew our friendship would never be the same after that. He had been my best friend since I moved, and losing that was really difficult.

We remained friends throughout high school, but definitely kept our distance. It was too hard to be close friends. We always were friendly though, and often had chats about life, relationships, and whatever else. By the time high school ended it really felt like we could just be friends and it would be totally fine.

In college, he went away to Tulane. We didn’t keep in touch that much during the school year, but whenever he was home we always managed to get together and catch up. He became quite the partier, and I wasn’t at all, so that wedged a distance between us.

Once we graduated, he moved back home not too long after, and was briefly living at home, as was I. He started to work for my mom at her firm. We got together to catch up, like usual, and he mentioned that he was looking to move to DC in a house with a few people. I said that I wanted in! I honestly don’t even know why I did, looking back it seems like such an odd choice for me, and out of character. But I guess I needed a change of scenery, and it sounded like fun. I had some bad experiences living with a group of girls in the past, so a group of boys sounded much better.

We moved into an awesome house in DC in the summer, Scott, myself, and two other guys. Once we moved in together EVERYONE kept telling me that we’d end up together. Like seriously, SO many people. It got annoying, because (sorry Scott) I in NO way saw him like that. He was just my friend, and nothing more.

The year was pretty good, and my friendship with Scott became stronger than ever. We just got along so well, had the same sense of humor, and enjoyed each others company. He lived on the third level of the house, me on the second. We’d spend so many nights where I’d sit on the floor outside my door, and him on the stairs, chatting about anything and everything for hours.

One of the roommates didn’t get along with us that well, which of course caused tension in the house. It really caused the other 3 of us to get very close, especially Scott and myself. We often would spend hours outside the house just avoiding going back home and living amongst the tension.

As the year went on and we grew closer, I think my feelings developed really really slowly. I didn’t think of him that way for a long time, even as we grew so close as friends. I do remember thinking to myself that even though I didn’t feel *that* way about him, if either of us got into relationships, we couldn’t maintain the friendship we had. I felt jealous when he started dating someone, but to me it was because I thought I was going to lose my friend. Maybe it was something else, who knows.

My birthday came around in April, and a big group of us went out drinking and dancing, just being silly. I remember at one point Scott giving me a big hug and telling me that I was his best friend. That’s a special memory to me, I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.

By the time we came back to the house afterwards I felt pretty sick #lightweight. I remember Scott caring for me, getting me ice water with a straw, and being sweet. It immediately sparked my feelings for him, clear as day. My girlfriend, Chrissie, was spending the night and had already gone upstairs. After I felt a little better I went up to my room and told her right away that I thought I had a crush on Scott. She was like, “Yeah, duh,” or something along those lines. She was one of the first people to think we’d end up together.

Scott and I never addressed it, and since both of us are shy, it took a few weeks for anything to happen. We grew increasingly flirty, and basically went on dates without admitting that’s what they were, but still nothing happened.

Memorial Day weekend, Friday night, we decided to have a night in of drinking wine and watching a movie. Throughout the movie, we both inched closer on the couch until eventually his arm was around me, and we still were playing it off that we were just friends ?But, I eventually was like “UM HELLO WHAT IS HAPPENING” and it just spilled out of both of us.

Honestly, it freaked us both out for a few weeks. We knew right away that we could never date casually, there was just too much at stake between being roommates, best friends, the fact that he worked for my mom, and our moms were best friends. It was complicated, and overwhelmed us. We also knew that this really could be the real deal kinda thing. So, we took it pretty slow, and kept it mostly to ourselves for about a month. But, you can imagine how excited our moms were, lol. Eventually it wasn’t so much of a secret anymore, and 3+ years later, here we are!

So much has happened between now and then, it’s crazy to look back on it all. But the common thread throughout the entirety of our relationship, starting in 6th grade, is that we’re the best of friends. We can always joke, have a great time doing absolutely nothing together, and are always there for each other.
