In case you didn’t see this little update on the blog, Scott and I got ENGAGED. Still in complete shock about it. Is that normal???
WARNING: This post is LONG. I’m too detailed and a rambler. It’s a dangerous combo. If you ever watched my IG Stories, then you know.
I’ve *always* known that I would want to document our engagement story here on the blog because I want to remember every little detail of that day. I want to be able to look back when the memories become fuzzy and read it and remember what a beautiful day it was. I want to be able to share this with our future kiddos, and show them how their dad asked me to marry him.
Okay wow that made me tear up a bit.
We’re getting MARRIED. I have pictured this for so long. I can’t believe this!!!!
If you haven’t read my How We Met post, I’ll give ya a quick little summary. We met in 6th grade, and he was one of my first friends. In 8th and 9th grade we were a cute little middle school couple, he was actually my first kiss ❤️but we went our separate ways after that still remaining friends. We kept in touch throughout college, getting together over the various breaks to catch up. Once I graduated, he mentioned he was moving to a group house in DC, and I asked if I could tag along. We quickly became best of friends once again, and a year into living together, started dating. Been best friends ever since.
ANYWAYS. To the good stuff.
It was no surprise to me that we were going to get engaged. We’ve had multiple conversations about this, planned for our future, etc. Months ago we went to look at rings, so like….I knew it was going to happen at some point. We’re both too practical to jump into something like that without talking about it ahead of time. TBH, I knew I was going to marry him the moment we admitted we had feelings for each other nearly 5 years ago, which was actually terrifying. So I’m glad we waited till now to get engaged because I don’t think either of us were ready until now. It’s what made the most sense for us.
He all the sudden started joking about it a whole bunch and dropping really obvious hints. I had once told him that he had to make sure my nails were painted ahead of time, so for weeks he would look at my nails and be like, “Oh, you’re not ready…” (because hashtag lazy about painting my nails)
He really made it seem like he was going to do it at this Christmas lights display we were going to. Like REALLY went out of his way to make it seem like it was going to happen. He went too hard trying to play me. There was this huge diamond ring display and he asked if I wanted to take a pic under there and I was confused like…..idk do YOU? You tell me!!! And so we didn’t and I was left a little disappointed and definitely confused. I think he realized he went too hard, but all is forgiven now 😉
Fast forward to his birthday. With the days leading up to that him constantly dropping hints about it happening on Valentine’s Day or my birthday (in April). Which to me only indicated it wouldn’t happen then, but I had no idea when.
We made plans for the day after his birthday, January 18th, with his sister and her bf. We were going to do the museums in DC and this fancy dinner at a restaurant he’s been dying to go to. The day of he was totally normal, at least to me. We played some music as we got ready to go out, I played a favorite old timey song that will now always remind me of that day and the last few hours we spent as boyfriend and girlfriend <3
I honestly didn’t think it was going to happen, but I had this little feeling in the back of my mind to be ready JUST in case. I was preparing myself to be disappointed though. I did paint my nails!! Justttttt in case.
His sister texted us to push back the plans because her boyfriend had something going on at school, which made me think okay yeah it’s def not going to happen today otherwise why would they be so casual about changing up the plans.
We met up with them at the portrait gallery, everyone seemed normal and not suspicious. The longer we were there the more I thought that it wasn’t going to happen because I just didn’t see where it could even happen.
We went through the gallery, I took my time looking at all the pictures. Took this selfie with my man, Lin.

The longer we went through the gallery, the more weird Scott started to act. He was on his phone a lot and trying to hide it from me. He asked me to take pictures of stuff that I knew he didn’t really care to have pictures of. Kept trying to hang back so he could be texting. It was starting to get really suspicious. I was starting to get SO NERVOUS.
We went into another room and again, I’m just looking at all the displays, but he isn’t at all. He was acting super weird. I remember saying that I was super hot in that room and he was like yeah same, then put his jacket on…? I was so incredibly nervous cause I knew it was going to happen. So so so nervous. Why???? Idk.
He brought me to the middle of the room and we faced each other and he held both of my hands. What did he say when he asked??? Good question. We couldn’t tell ya. We were both so nervous we completely blacked out!
But I remember bits and pieces. He told me that he loved me. And that I made him laugh, and he wanted to feel that way for the rest of his life. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!
????
Me, being a complete bundle of nerves, responded with, “yeah sure okay” and he stood up and put the ring on my finger. We kissed and hugged and all that jazz. I said OMG a million times!
He pointed out that his sister and her boyfriend were at the end of the hallway capturing the moment, and BOY did they capture it. Will cherish these photos forever and ever.

We took a few more pictures at the gallery, I continued to freak out, then we headed out to his birthday dinner, which turned out to be a surprise dinner he planned with our family. I had told him that I wanted our family to be there to celebrate with us in some way, and he planned it perfectly! I had a pretty good idea it was happening because right after we got engaged I asked if I could call my mom and he told me I couldn’t ?
He had coordinated with my parents, his parents, my best friend and her husband, and his grandparents (who live in Florida!!), to come to this dinner to celebrate with us. He did such a good job planning that in secret for about a month or so in advance, I had no idea!
He even had asked my parents for their blessing a month earlier ❤️
We were early for the reservation so we walked to a coffee shop. I remember having a moment of thinking like I’m in it right now. That is was an important night in my life and I still had the entire dinner ahead of me and I was fully just in the moment. Idk how to explain it, but if you’ve watched The Office there’s a quote from Andy where he says “I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them.” That’s how I felt, like I knew I was currently in the “good old days”. Does that make any sense?? Probably not. But I think I’ll always remember that moment.
We walked to the dinner and were greeted by all of our family + my best friend and her husband. I was so touched everyone came out to celebrate with us. Especially his grandparents and dad flying in from Florida, and my best friend driving pretty far and spending an evening away from her precious new baby boy.

We were in a private room at RPM, which was lovely and deliiiish. We ate a LOT. Got grilled on all the wedding planning things. Since our moms knew about a month ahead of time (and are besties, btw), they had already BEGUN the wedding planning process. They wanted to get right down to business! As did his grandma, who I think was a little disappointed we weren’t getting married right then and there ?
And that was pretty much it. I feel like it’s very cliche and cheesy to be like Ohhhh it was so perfect, but sry not sry, it actually was. It was very us. Silliness, being weirdos, eating too much. Us in a nutshell, tbh.
I used to worry about getting engaged and married, and feared that I would have a lot of anxiety about the decision to spend the rest of my life with one person. But it turns out it’s a pretty easy decision to make when that person is your best friend ❤️
